This is a genuine and truly local place, created as a gathering place for friends by the owners, Paulo and Isabel. It’s relatively off the center, but just because Faro is so compact: 500 meters walking from the marina.
So, once upon the time, there was a traditional grocery shop on this spot. Eventually the people running that business became to an age of retirement and that’s when Paulo and Isabel stepped in and created the space in which we can now indulge ourselves with Portuguese petiscos, a word which refers to small portions of food, a bit like the famous Spanish taps.
If there are diferences between petiscos and tapas is that in Portugal we might have a proper meal with petiscos, as tapas are more a munching thing, going along with a glass of beer in a late evening gathering of friends. So, usually petiscos portions are more generous. Consider two or three portions per person. Four, if you eat above average.
In Mercearia de São Pedro you will find Portuguese flavors, small dishes prepared with love by Isabel. It’s a great place to enjoy some petiscos in an informal, familiar, atmosphere. The food is exquisite, and this is confirmed by the reviews in Trip Advisor: the restaurant was rated as #6 out of #333 in Faro at the time of writing. Check it here.
The prices are incredibly low for the quality. A bottle of wine under 5 Euros and a pint only 2 Euros. Portions of petiscos vary in price but expect to pay an average of 4 Euros for each one of your choices. Click on the image below for a full view of the food menu:
